Often I’ve heard and read the words:  without faith it is impossible to please God.  In my re-phrasing this statement, I would say, without faith it is impossible for me to endure life.   So what is faith?  The scripture says faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

As a girl growing up on a farm in the 50’s, I quickly realized the importance of growing food in order to survive.  Our family ritual was to plant all kinds of vegetable seeds in the garden every spring.  When the small sprouts came out of the soil, it was like magic.  It was exciting. On various “weeding days”, I watched them grow and looked forward to the harvest.

The mystery in all the “magic” of the sprouts is what was underneath; the roots.  The same principle applies to the growth of my faith. Endurance through various trials and unexpected challenges only happens with the stability of deep roots in God’s word which is where my faith comes from.  The instructions, exhortations, narratives and models of those who have gone before me, are the truths I need to stay grounded.
