Unchanging Commitment

7 x 7" , mixed media on paper.

The influence of a single life….Daniel’s. His unswerving faith always challenges me. I try to walk in his shoes and imagine a city where God has been silenced and there has been no worship for 70 years. He is in captivity. The king worships gold and silver, bronze and iron. There is disobedience, pride and selfishness. The king’s assistants manipulate a decree to destroy Daniel. In spite of peer pressure and being trapped in the laws of the land, he stayed in front of his window; with conviction; praying as he always did, three times a day to His God whom he served.

Then God appeared in the darkness.

Reflecting on this “children’s” story, I have to wonder…….can those circumstances happen to me? Realistically, trying not to be an alarmist, yes, I think they could. Then I have to ask the question: do I have the conviction of Daniel? Would I intentionally stand in front of my window or pull the blinds and hide in my closet to pray? Would I stop going to church? Would I fight the court injunction to throw me in jail? Tough questions. I can’t give the answers. But this piece visually expresses what my heart wants to do, with or without threats: continually serve and reverence the God of Daniel who is a living God, endures forever, cannot be destroyed, has a never-ending dominion, performs wonders, and shows up in the darkness as rescuer.

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published. . .three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed. . .just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10
