The Cup

7 x 7" , watercolor on paper with gold leaf.

The chalice or cup, has always been a Christian symbol of Christ’s sacrifice and calls me back to the Last Supper: Jesus shared his meal with His closest friends while prophesying his death .

A Living Faith was a series of messages in our church. This piece became a meaningful icon for me because we took communion in each service. I have looked at the cup closely and discovered some fresh meaning. When I come to the cup after reflecting on my unworthiness, I look down at it. To partake in the meal acknowledging Christ’s sacrifice, I must take the bread and dip it into the cup. After partaking the meal, I serve it to a friend. It is not a passive encounter, it is intentional. I could rename this piece “The Love Cup”, as it is the ultimate loyal friendship offered to me by my Savior. I’m called to live a life of sacrifice honoring my Friend, the object of my devotion.

There is a lot of symbolism in this piece starting with the perspective of the cup; I ’m standing over it, looking into it. I have to see the sacrifice up close each time I share the cup. The repetition of circles are symbols of eternity and God’s perfection. The colors are grey for mourning and humility, purple for sorrow and penitence, green for triumph over death and gold for the everlasting God.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
