I AM
I heard someone state: the weightiest word in any language is the word for God. So, this is a very heavy piece as it brings in focus those powerful names. Paradoxically, it is also very light and quiet, as the white on white and fringed edge references the tallit, or prayer shawl used for personal prayer in the Old Testament and even to present day Jewish faith.
This piece evolved over time as experiences in my life informed the final expression. It began as usual, with scripture, thoughts and drawings in my sketchbook about Gods character and how He is a covering over me. It became more significant during the hurricanes when Gods protection came down to my own doorstep. The day I was sewing the final stitching and finished the piece, was election day, 2004. I was praying the names of God, which are the manifestation of his character.
Several scriptures were referenced in this piece, but Psalm 5:11 is a summary: But let all who take refuge in you be glad; Let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.
