Aletheia

7 x 7" , mixed media on paper with embossing and silver leaf.

My inspiration for this piece was based on the Greek word aletheia , which means truth. My intention was to express my understanding of how God’s truth is a stabilizing anchor in my life and worship. My thoughts were about the ocean where I am always amazed at the changing, powerful force of that magnificent body of water…..something unstable.

My first attempt at creating this piece was a smoothly blended blue section with waves at the top and the silver strip acting as the anchor. As part of my technique, I added thin Japanese paper on top of the blue wash. What appeared were these unexpected, uneven strokes showing through. That was not what I intended and I almost threw this away. But as I started over to make a second smooth wash, I kept looking at this irregular piece and it became clear to me this was the expression I was looking for. . .uncontrollable forces of the undertow, riptides, and cross currents which are evident in the ocean that the anchor holds against.

Circumstances, emotions, and world standards that I face daily can be unreliable, but my faith and worship depend on the reliability of Truth: and the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times. 2

God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth 1
